Students lend a hand to the Staffordshire Civil Contingencies Unit

BTEC Public Services students were invited to take part in an exercise by the Staffordshire Civil Contingencies Unit.

Staffordshire Civil Contingencies Unit created a mock scenario where there had been torrential rain for the last few days in Newcastle and houses had become flooded. People had to be evacuated to a rest centre until they could return home.

The Level 3 students played the role of evacuees, acting as parents, elderly people and children. The exercise took place at Knutton Recreation Centre and upon arrival the students were greeted by volunteers from various agencies including Newcastle Borough Council, St John Ambulance and Staffordshire Police.

They were provided with hot drinks, food, clothing, and blankets and reassured about their situation. Some received medical treatment from St Johns Ambulance if it indicated on their crib card that they had medical needs.

The exercise provided important training for the Staffordshire Civil Contingencies Unit and volunteers.  The exercise was particularly useful for NULC students to see first hand what would happen to members of the public if they had to leave their homes with no belongings in an emergency.  The exercise also gave students the practical knowledge to help them with their Major Incidents Module on the Level 3 BTEC in Public Services.

BTEC Public Services students presented cheques to various charities including The Fire Fighter’s Charity, Help for Heroes and S.E.N.D.S.  The hard working students organised a week of events in May to raise money for charity, including climbing Snowdon, a Rowathon and Car Wash and have raised an astonishing £2291 in total.

Representatives from the charities were invited to attend a cheque presentation at the College on Thursday 23 May.  Students presented the cheques to their chosen charity and spoke of their reasons for choosing the specific charities.

BTEC Public Services lecturer Rob Hadnum said “We’re all so extremely proud of the amount of money the students have raised.  They really threw themselves in to the project and their hard work has really paid off.  To raise just under £3000 in 1 week is phenomenal.”

The students organised the events as part of a module on their BTEC Public Services course.  The BTEC Public Services course at NULC prepares students who want to progress in to a career in the uniformed forces.  To find out more about studying a BTEC Public Services course at NULC click here, call 01782 254254 or email info@nulc.ac.uk

Superhero students raise £1000 for charity

On Friday 6 May 2011, class 1c BTEC Public Service students undertook a climb of Snowdon. The venture was in aid of charity and the route took them from the car park at Pen-y-Pass, then via the Miners track to the summit.  Following days of wonderful weather the students emerged from their tents to face heavy rain, strong winds and poor visibility, but all being Super Hero’s they were not deterred. The group made their way slowly to the summit. It was not without risk as the gusts of wind were unpredictable and the rock slippery. The students were not complete novices in the outdoor environment; their BTEC Public Service course includes outdoor skills and navigation but it was their first venture onto a 3500 feet mountain.

The charity is based in Leek and is involved in developing educational facilities in the village of Sandally in the Gambia. The founder Mr Bob Hadnum, the father of Rob Hadnum Curriculum Leader in Public Services, met the students at the summit (Mr Hadnum had made his way up the mountain via the Snowdon Mountain Railway from Llanberis). The students were pleased to tell Mr Hadnum that they had raised in excess of £1000 pounds for the project. In true super hero style the students packed away their super hero suits and disappeared into the mist their task completed.

Students join forces with Staffordshire Fire and Rescue

Public Services students from Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC) today assisted Staffordshire Fire and Rescue in a terrorism decontamination drill.

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue will undertook the practical ‘drill’ exercise, with the students’ assistance on today, in order to provide its officers with up-to-date training and realistic experience in using decontamination equipment.

The College’s visitor car park was transformed and used as the dummy setting for a public place where a terrorist contamination incident has occurred. The exercise will gave the BTEC Public Services students first-hand experience of the complex work undertaken by the Uniformed Services as they play the role of members of the public affected.

Once the drill commenced at approximately 10.30am, students were contaminated with talcum powder then required to get changed into orange robes and pass through a warm shower in a decontamination tent, before eventually being returned with their belongings.

Jill Salt, Public Services Lecturer at the College said “The students are very excited about participating in the event and they'll gain valuable first hand experience of the work of the firefighters in situations like these. The College have outstanding links with Staffordshire Fire and Rescue and I’m very grateful to for their continued support."

Good luck to super hero students

Everyone at NULC are sending a message of Good Luck to the group of first year BTEC Public Service students who are facing the greatest challenge of their lives.

As part of their latest module the students have been tasked with organising charity events, resulting in them climbing to the 3,560ft summit of Snowdon on Friday 6 May.

As if facing the daunting climb wasn’t enough, the energetic students decided that both themselves and lecturers should attempt the climb dressed as superheroes!  Lecturers Ron Morley and Rob Hadnum have elected themselves as Batman and Robin and a whole host of superheroes turned up today in their outfits.

The group are raising money for the leek based Sandally Education and Development Scheme (S.E.N.D.S), who help the lives of children in a tiny village in The Gambia. The charity assists with and provides school equipment, building of toilet blocks and library equipment. The latest project, which the students are raising money for is building accommodation blocks for the teachers. The teachers are essential in providing an education for the children of Sandally.

NULC students pay respects to the British Armed Forces

BTEC Public Services students recently visited the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire.  The visit took place as part of their course, to raise the students understanding of what ‘ultimate sacrifice’ means.

Whilst visiting the National Memorial Arboretum the students were given the opportunity to pay their respects on behalf of themselves and the College. During a service of remembrance several students proudly took part in readings and laid a wreath on the Armed Forces Memorial.

Created in 1997, the National Memorial Arboretum is a special place that remembers those who have served, and continue to serve, the British nation in many different ways.

With some 50,000 trees already planted, and 200 dedicated memorials established on the site, the Arboretum is a living tribute that will forever acknowledge the personal sacrifices made by the armed and civil services of this country.

The BTEC Public Services course at NULC provides students with in depth training for careers in the Uniformed forces, such as the Emergency Services, Armed Forces and the Prison Service.

NULC do 'something funny for money'

If there's one thing that NULC staff and students like to do its ‘something funny for money’ in aid of Comic Relief.  NULC was a hub of activity on Friday 18 March with fancy dress, bake sales, waxing and the most talked about event of the day, the NULC FlashMob.

Dance Lecturer Faye Matthews rounded up her troupes which included students, staff and even a member of the senior management team.  Then headed to the new Sainsbury’s store in Newcastle-under-Lyme, where they wowed the crowds and are now rapidly becoming an online phenomenon.

Other activities taking place throughout the day included a fancy dress competition which resulted in a monkey and pirates roaming the corridors!  A yummy bake sale organised by Early Years students, Fun Run by Sports Performance and Excellence students, leg waxing in the Transform Salon.  As well as various fund raising efforts by Learner Services, Starbucks staff and the Students’ Union.

The money is still being counted but so far NULC have managed to raise over £500.00, which is a fantastic amount.  Thank you to everyone who took part and did ‘something funny for money’.
