Students lend a hand to the Staffordshire Civil Contingencies Unit

BTEC Public Services students were invited to take part in an exercise by the Staffordshire Civil Contingencies Unit.

Staffordshire Civil Contingencies Unit created a mock scenario where there had been torrential rain for the last few days in Newcastle and houses had become flooded. People had to be evacuated to a rest centre until they could return home.

The Level 3 students played the role of evacuees, acting as parents, elderly people and children. The exercise took place at Knutton Recreation Centre and upon arrival the students were greeted by volunteers from various agencies including Newcastle Borough Council, St John Ambulance and Staffordshire Police.

They were provided with hot drinks, food, clothing, and blankets and reassured about their situation. Some received medical treatment from St Johns Ambulance if it indicated on their crib card that they had medical needs.

The exercise provided important training for the Staffordshire Civil Contingencies Unit and volunteers.  The exercise was particularly useful for NULC students to see first hand what would happen to members of the public if they had to leave their homes with no belongings in an emergency.  The exercise also gave students the practical knowledge to help them with their Major Incidents Module on the Level 3 BTEC in Public Services.

Students explore the Peak District

Students from NULC's BTEC Level 3 in Public Services undertook their first expedition of the year.  The group who are now in their second year of the vocational course visited the Peak District as part of the practical phase of expedition planning.

The group are scheduled to take part in a second expedition which will see them exploring a more remote environment later in the year.
