NULC students pay respects to the British Armed Forces

BTEC Public Services students recently visited the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire.  The visit took place as part of their course, to raise the students understanding of what ‘ultimate sacrifice’ means.

Whilst visiting the National Memorial Arboretum the students were given the opportunity to pay their respects on behalf of themselves and the College. During a service of remembrance several students proudly took part in readings and laid a wreath on the Armed Forces Memorial.

Created in 1997, the National Memorial Arboretum is a special place that remembers those who have served, and continue to serve, the British nation in many different ways.

With some 50,000 trees already planted, and 200 dedicated memorials established on the site, the Arboretum is a living tribute that will forever acknowledge the personal sacrifices made by the armed and civil services of this country.

The BTEC Public Services course at NULC provides students with in depth training for careers in the Uniformed forces, such as the Emergency Services, Armed Forces and the Prison Service.

Superhero students climb Snowdon for charity

A group of first year BTEC Public Service students from Newcastle-under-Lyme College (NULC) are facing the greatest challenge of their lives.

As part of their latest module the students have been tasked with organising charity events, resulting in them climbing to the 3,560ft summit of Snowdon on Friday 6 May.

As if facing the daunting climb wasn’t enough, the energetic students decided that they should, along with the lecturers, attempt the climb dressed as superheroes!  Lecturers Ron Morley and Rob Hadnum have elected themselves as Batman and Robin and a whole host of superheroes are expected on the day.

The group are raising money for the Leek based Sandally Education and Development Scheme (S.E.N.D.S), who help the lives of children in a tiny village in Gambia.

The charity assists with and provides school equipment, building of toilet blocks and library equipment. The latest project, which the students are raising money for, is building accommodation blocks for the teachers. The teachers are essential in providing an education for the children of Sandally.

The BTEC Public Services course at NULC prepares students for careers in the Uniformed Public Services such as the Emergency Services, Armed Forces, the Prison Service and many more.

The climb forms part of Charity Week which the Public Services students have organised. Students have also organised a car wash at Newcastle Fire Station on Tuesday 10 May, rowathon at The Gordon Banks Sports Centre on Tuesday 10 May, a music gig at The Old Brown Jug on Wednesday 11 May and a raffle.
